Toys R Us Recalling Crib Toy For Potential Strangulation Risk

WASHINGTON -- Toys R Us, Paramus, New Jersey, is voluntarily recalling approximately 700 Educalux crib toys because of a potential strangulation risk to infants.

Toys R Us, sold this toy for approximately $15.00 during 1988 in stores in California, Chicago, Illinois; and the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. The "Pram and Cot Baby Toy" has a wooden bar suspended by yellow elastic cords that attach to the sides of a crib with white plastic hooks. "Educalux" and "Made in France" appear on a blue and white label on the wooden bar. Plastic teddy bears and a flower figure are suspended from the bar along with some brightly colored wooden grasping.

Although no strangulations or injuries have been reported involving this product, Toys R Us is recalling the toy because consumers may leave it in a crib or playpen longer than is considered safe. The package states the crib toy is appropriate for infants beginning at three months of age, but does not caution consumers to remove the product from a crib when infant begins to push up on hands and knees or reaches five months of age. The packaging also does not contain information about the potential risk if the toy is not removed from cribs.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, beginning at about five months of age, infants may be able to pull themselves up to a hanging crib toy, become entangled or fall forward over it, possible strangling.

Consumers who have the Educalux crib toy should remove it from cribs or playpens and return it to the nearest Toys R Us for a full refund.
