7 Tips for Air Travel Without Headaches
By Ugur Akinci

1) Wear a pair of sandals, loafers or strapless shoes. Your shoes should be problem-free enough to take them out quickly at airport security check points and then to put them back on equally quickly once you pass the metal detector and body search. Avoid boots with long straps and multiple buckles.

2) Pack the following items in your check-in baggage: nail and nose clippers, shampoo (wrapped up tight in plastic bag), hair curlers, metal pots and utensils. Also, if you're traveling frequently by air, think twice before getting any body piercings and metal rings. They can set off security alarms and hamper your progress through crowded security gates.

3) Stick to a basic and simple diet. Avoid fresh fruits and greens abroad since they are the least disinfected of all food items and can trigger a diarrhea or dysentery attack. Bread, cheese and bottled commercial water is usually a good safe bet. Never drink water from open public fountains that's available in many foreign countries. Stay away from gourmet dishes and rich cakes at all costs. Carry anti-diarrhea and anti-constipation pills with you, just in case.

4) Carry a zippered belt- or fanny-pack to carry your tickets, ID, passport, pills and medication, toothbrush and toothpaste, credit cards and wallet, cell phone, etc. Make sure the zippered mouth of the pack is in front of you, on your belly, for easy access and added security.

5) Do not carry any liquids or creams in tubes, cans or bottles larger than 3 ounces. The airport security personnel will immediately confiscate them.

6) Carry a small voltage splitter or power strip to share the limited power outlets at the airport lounges with other laptop users.

7) Carry an inflatable neck-pillow in your carry-on bag to support your neck for a comfortable nap while you fly.
