When is a good time to arrive and
depart Nantucket Island in
Massachusetts? It is probably the best
idea to make your travel plans to arrive
and depart during mid-week. This would
be Monday through Thursday. You will be
more likely to miss the heavy weekend
traffic over the Cape Cod Canal bridges
and all the large crowds at ferry docks
and airports. When to visit, how to get
to Nantucket, Massachusetts and how to
get around the island during your stay
will be some of the first decisions you
will have to make when planning a visit
to Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. In
this series of articles I will offer you
suggestions about planning your
Nantucket Island Getaway Vacation.
There are two major airports within
equal distance of Nantucket Island in
Massachusetts. One is in Boston (Logan
International Airport) and the other is
in Providence, Rhode Island (the T.F.
Green International Airport). Wherever
you are coming from, plan to arrive at
one of these two major airports.
Your next decision will be to arrange
transportation to Nantucket Island via a
connecting air service, a bus, taxi or
by renting a car.
The majority of visitors to Nantucket
choose to arrive by ferry from Hyannis.
Hyannis is located in the middle of Cape
Cod and is the transportation center of
the region. You can plan on an
approximate 30-minute drive from the
Bourne and Sagamore Bridges that span
the Cape Cod Canal and connect Cape Cod
to the mainland. Beware of problem
traffic on the Cape during peak summer
season. This is especially true during
July and August. Plan your driving time
accordingly.
Arriving by Airplane
There are a few commercial airlines
and aircraft charter companies that
offer regular scheduled service to the
Nantucket Memorial Airport. These
flights are enjoyable. When the weather
is good, you can enjoy beautiful aerial
views of the Cape Cod peninsula and
surrounding islands. A few of these
services include:
• Cape Air: They provide year round
service to Nantucket Memorial Airport
from Boston and New Bedford,
Massachusetts, from Providence Rhode
Island, and other local airports in
Provincetown (Cape Cod) and Martha’s
Vineyard
• Continental Express Airlines: Provides
a seasonal service to Nantucket from
Newark, New Jersey.
• Island Airlines: This airline provides
convenient year-round service between
Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis
and Nantucket Memorial Airport. They
have hourly departures.
• Linear Air: Flies from Boston and New
York City to Nantucket and Martha’s
Vineyard. They also have private
charters available to over 500 cities in
the Eastern U.S. and Canada.
• Nantucket Airlines: Provides
year-round service to Nantucket Memorial
Airport from Hyannis, Massachusetts
(Cape Cod).
• US Airways Express: Provides a
seasonal service to Nantucket Memorial
Airport from LaGuardia International
Airport in New York, Philadelphia and
Washington, D.C. and locally from
Hyannis, Massachusetts (Cape Cod).
Arriving by Bus
If you want to travel by bus to
Nantucket, there are several convenient
bus services to key connection points
for Nantucket. Of particular note,
however, is that some of the bus
connections may require a separate taxi
ride to the Nantucket ferry terminal.
You will need to check the bus schedule
and details before finalizing your
vacation plan schedule. Some bus
services include:
• Peter Pan/Bonanza Bus Lines:
Provides year-round service to Bourne
and Falmouth/Woods Hole and Hyannis from
Boston Logan Airport, downtown, Boston,
Washington, D.C., Baltimore,
Philadelphia, New York City, Providence,
Rhode Island, New Bedford, Worcester and
Western Massachusetts.
• Plymouth & Brockton Bus Line: Offers
service to Hyannis year-round from
Washington, D.C., Baltimore,
Philadelphia, New York City, Providence,
Rhode Island, Fall River and New
Bedford, Massachusetts.
