Prior to the westward movement of Native American people, Arkansas was inhabited by Quapaw, Caddo, and Osage Nations. The first European to reach the region was the Spaniard, Hernando de Soto, at the end of the 16th Century. Early Spanish and French explorers gave the state its name which is probably a phonetic spelling for the French or Catalan word for "downriver people" - a reference to the Quapaw Native Americans.

History of Arkansas
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sunil_Tanna]Sunil Tanna

Prior to the westward movement of Native American people, Arkansas was inhabited by Quapaw, Caddo, and Osage Nations.

The first European to reach the region was the Spaniard, Hernando de Soto, at the end of the 16th Century. Early Spanish and French explorers gave the state its name which is probably a phonetic spelling for the French or Catalan word for "downriver people" - a reference to the Quapaw Native Americans.

Arkansas was part of the area acquired by the United States in the 1803 Louisiana purchase from France. Prior to statehood, the region was known as the "Arkansaw Territory". In this territorial period, the five "civilized" tribes, namely the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Cherokee, and Seminole, inhabited Arkansas.

Arkansas was admitted to the Union on June 15th 1836 as the 25th state. Arkansas was a slave state, but initially refused to join the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, although it did join later, and was the scene of several battles.

During the Civil Rights struggle, Arkansas was the site of a famous confrontation between the federal government and local whites, who were resisting the desegregation of Central High School in the state capital, Little Rock. During this period, President Eisenhower famously sent troops to escort nine African-American students who were trying to enroll in the school.

Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States (President from 1993 to 2001), was born in Hope, Arkansas, and served as Governor of the state (50th and 52nd Governor of Arkansas) for almost 12 years prior to being elected President.

Arkansas Casinos
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Adel_Awwad]Adel Awwad

The state of Arkansas is a Southern state with a population of nearly 3 million. Arkansas’ capital city is Little Rock, where one of Arkansas’ casinos is located. The state of Arkansas is the only U.S. state with an official pronunciation (ar-kan-SAW), and the only state where diamonds are found naturally. There are not a large number of Arkansas casinos, but visitors to Arkansas can find gambling action in several places situated around the state.

One popular Arkansas casino is Cherokee Casino in Siloam Springs. This 50,000 square foot casino is open 24 hours a day and features a restaurant and a bar with live music. This Arkansas casino boasts 813 electronic gaming machines and over 40 tables for card games, roulette, craps and more—including 19 poker tables. One interesting feature of Cherokee Casino is that they offer poker games that are played against other players rather than the house. Cherokee Casino is an Arkansas casino worth checking out.

Another Arkansas casino, located in Holiday Island, is Spinzz Casino. This Arkansas casino was closed down because of gambling law disputes but has recently reopened for business. Guests visiting Spinzz Casino can stay at the nearby Spinzz Casino Hotel to be close to the action.

Though there are not many Arkansas casinos, there is a town with a rich casino history, which also happens to be former President Clinton’s boyhood hometown. Hot Springs, Arkansas, in addition to being celebrated for its naturally 140-degree mineral springs, was one of America’s original “sin cities.” The town was a meeting place for gangsters, but instead of shoot-outs and showdowns, crime families such as the Nittis and the Capones would come to Hot Springs to sit down and talk. Historic Arkansas casinos were rampant in Hot Springs, and despite their “illegal” designation, residents of the town insisted that the casinos were good for business. At its peak, Hot Springs served as a Mecca for gambling and tourists flocked to the colorful Arkansas casinos lining its streets.

Today there are fewer choices for Arkansas casinos. However, gamblers looking for great casino action can visit the exciting Cherokee Casino or the centrally located Spinzz Casino. Of course, online Arkansas casinos are always a great option for anyone! Despite limited availability, Arkansas casinos have a long and rich history and should not be overlooked by casino aficionados and casual gamblers. Visit an Arkansas casino today!

Romantic Destinations in Arkansas
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Richard_Rspad]Richard Rspad

If you are looking to avoid the herd, you need to find those special little places around the country. Romantic destinations in Arkansas should do just the trick.

Arkansas is one of the southern United States' hidden treasures. Full of history, as well as beauty and tranquility, this state offers lovers a wonderful spot for their next weekend trip. If you enjoy the peaceful beauty of a forest, the gentle rush of a stream or burble of a creek, Arkansas offers all of these experiences and more. The city of Little Rock has much to see and do with a great nightlife, and the area around the state's capital holds many inns and bed and breakfasts to enjoy.

Romantic destinations in Arkansas are extraordinarily easy to find, if you know where to look. One such place is found right within the city limits of Little Rock, at the Empress of Little Rock hotel. This luxury establishment is rated Four Diamonds by the AAA (American Automobile Association), which designates it as a very posh hotel, indeed. Built in the 1880's, the Empress strives to offer its guests a trip back in time, by treating them to featherbeds, antiques in all the rooms, and candlelight breakfasts. This resort is also available for small, intimate weddings, if your romantic destination leans towards this sort of celebration.

There are other spots available throughout the state that offer romance, and not all of them are located in city atmospheres. Hot Springs, Arkansas, also offers many different resorts and inns that are perfect for your next romantic destinations in Arkansas. Along with these intimate places to stay, you also get the benefit of having the attractions of the town to amuse you during the day. The Heated Springs that named the town are available for spa luxury and other treatments, and there are also spots surrounding Hot Springs that are perfect for day trips. The mountains in the area are filled with hiking trails, making for a great outdoor activity.

The 1890 Williams House Bed and Breakfast, located in the Hot Springs National Park, is a converted mansion and carriage house that has five guest rooms in the main house and two in the carriage house. The Carriage House rooms are particularly sought after for romance, as they are more secluded – as well as being filled with beautiful antiques and sharing the same amenities such as gourmet breakfasts, air conditioning, and other convenience appliances.

Arkansas is a hidden treasure when it comes to romance, with many couples from the state not even realizing the beautiful spots in their backyard. Planning some romantic destinations in Arkansas will be sure to put a spark into your relationship!

Arkansas Duck Hunting
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Fadi_Ayat]Fadi Ayat

Arkansas is known to a capital of duck hunting which is why it is being visited by hunting enthusiasts, young and old, for the best duck hunting escapades. Arkansas duck hunting may be a rare experience most especially for those who reside far from this place. Because of this, it is necessary for someone planning to hunt ducks in Arkansas to be prepared and make the right plan before getting into Arkansas.

The following are basic tips for hunters who are planning to make a hunting trip to Arkansas. First, timing is important. The most desirable season to come is during mid to late December until January. Many agree that January is actually the best time to go for Arkansas duck hunting. This certain month is the time when a pretty number of ducks have arrived in the place because of the weather conditions.

Getting a guide is also recommended since they are familiar to the place and they can give you specific tips when it comes to Arkansas duck hunting. However, there are certain guides which make the trip more horrible and sometimes would make you think it would be better to go on a hunt without them. The best solution to avoid these hunting trip wreckers is to ask for someone who have already been in a hunting trip there and get a recommendation as to the tour guide who would be useful. Most often than not, those oldies in the business are more dependable and worth the hire rather than newbie guides.

What should you bring in the duration of the hunting trip? In Arkansas, inclement weather is not uncommon. They say that in a matter of days, temperature ranges from 70 to 20 degrees so it is a necessity to bring variety of clothes suited for all weather conditions. Surely, you wouldn't want to get sick while in Arkansas and miss the fun.

It is also necessary to bring hip boots so that you can wade in the water. You should also wear camouflage patterns so as not to drive ducks away from you. The ducks can still see clearly though so you should bring masks or face covers so that they won't get away. And of course, since hunting is your purpose, never forget to bring a gun. Arkansas duck hunting is not a common thing to do so make the most out of it when you get there.

Have You Tried Trout Fishing In Arkansas?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ian_Botham]Ian Botham

To me, baseball is not the great American pastime, fishing is. I was raised on Arkansas trout fishing, and my son has been raised on it as well. Trout fishing in Arkansas is one of the most popular ways to spend time. You see, things move a little bit slower down there. I do not want you to think that we are all rednecks. Yes friends, we have electricity, plumbing, high-tech industry, and some of the greatest cities in the world. In Arkansas, however, unlike in much of the rest of America, these things do not replace the great outdoors. We still continue to take pleasure in nature, even as we enjoy the modern conveniences of life.

I still remember my first Arkansas trout fishing trip. I was with my uncle, who I thought was a nut. He would make strange jokes that his kids could not understand, and sometimes stared off into the distance, but boy did that man know how to fish for trout. He taught me all the tricks that you need to know for Arkansas trout fishing. He taught me how to use fishing flies, lures, sinkers, hooks, and all the rest. By the time I was done with a trip, I thought of myself as an expert fisherman.

It turns out that my dad had been into Arkansas trout fishing for a long time, but had given it up in the last few years. It seems that he just did not have enough time anymore, but when I began to ask him to take me on a trip, he gladly agreed. Our first Arkansas trout fishing trip was a little bit awkward. You see, my dad was not really the talkative type, and it was hard for him to be alone with nothing to do but sit there and fish for so long. On the other hand, I was just the opposite, and liked to talk nonstop. It took a while to get into a natural rhythm, but when we did, it was smooth sailing from there.

If you have never been Arkansas trout fishing before, I suggest that you go with an expert. You see, the streams are different at different times of years, and you have to use different fishing techniques. It can actually get pretty complicated. You will have much more success with your Arkansas trout fishing adventure if you go with someone who knows the ropes. They can show you how it's done.

7 Great Things To Do in Arkansas
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ugur_Akinci]Ugur Akinci

1) Take a scenic drive on Arkansas' state highways to appreciate the beauty of the Ozarks and other famous natural attractions. Arkansas Scenic 7 will take you through the best vistas the Ozark and Ouachita mountains have to offer. Arkansas 309 climbs 2,753 feet to the state's highest summit. If you don't like the heights and prefer to keep as close to the “sea level” as possible, try Interstate 530 which winds its way through wetlands and Bayou Bartholomew.

2) Don't forget to stop by Arkansas' many wineries for some refined wine tasting, relaxing and shopping. Here are just a few suggested pit stops along the “fermentation route”: Chateau Aux Arc, Mount Bethel Winery, Post Familie Vineyards & Winery, and Wiederkehr Wine Cellars and Vineyard.

3) Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park is the right place to be for the history and Civil War buffs in the family. Join the hour-long tours led by professional guides and learn more about the events of that painful era in American history.

4) Arkansas takes pride in its historic preservation efforts. There are many sites throughout the state where you can visit and appreciate old cabins, homes, court houses and Indian villages still pretty much looking the way they looked a hundred fifty years ago. Parkin Archeological State Park is a good spot to start your historic heritage tour from. Also check out Crowley's Ridge State Park, Devil's Den State Park, and Jacksonport State Park.

5) Trail of Tears cuts through several state parks and withdraws thousands of visitors every year. In some of the parks you can actually walk through the same paths through which Native Americans were forced to march during their Westward migration. In other sections of the Trail, you are allowed only to view it from an overpass. The Trail winds through Lake Dardanelle State Park, Mount Nebo State Park, Petit Jean State Park, and Pinnacle Mountain State Park.

6) Ozark Folk Center is where you'll be treated to sweet folk music, and lots of it too, provided by the best country-folk and bluegrass musicians around. The center is also a great resource for researchers with 60,000 documents, Ozark recordings, and sets of sheet music.

7) Want to pay your respects to one of the oldest trees in the whole nation? Then head for the Historic Washington State Park, home to the giant Southern Royston magnolia tree registered with the Arkansas Famous and Historic Tree Program.
